What is Poker?

Poker is not a new game by any means. It’s been around in one form or another for centuries. Early in the twentieth century, poker broke into mainstream culture and it’s been getting more popular ever since then. To answer the question of “what is poker?”, you need to understand that there are a lot of different poker games.

Stud Poker

Stud poker is one of the simplest and oldest forms of poker. There are different variations, but stud poker always involves face-up cards and face-down cards. As players get more cards, they go through more betting rounds and all of the hands develop. In the end, the player with the best hand (5 or 7 cards) wins the pot.

Draw Poker

In draw poker, each player is dealt a full hand at the start of the game. As the betting rounds progress, players can replace cards in their hand with new, random cards. By doing this, players can actively develop their hands before it’s time for the show down. This kind of poker is very popular for home games.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold ’em really became popular late in the twentieth century as professional poker became a televised event. This game gives each player two starting hole cards. The center of the table gets five face-up common cards in the middle of the table that are used by all players to make their best possible five-card hands.
